What is this A KRISTY'S GREAT IDEA podcast episode about?
This episode covers the book that started it all — the Baby-Sitters Club origin story you probably didn't know was basically an accident. Jess and Rach dig into how Kristy's Great Idea came to exist without Ann M. Martin's input, the real friendships behind Kristy, Mary Anne, Claudia, and Stacey, and how one book turned into a 200+ title publishing machine, an HBO series, two further screen adaptations, and a Netflix reboot.
KRISTY'S GREAT IDEA Podcast Episode Summary
Kristy's Great Idea wasn't Ann M. Martin's idea at all. Scholastic editor Jean Feiwel noticed an obscure book called Ginny's Babysitting Job kept quietly outselling everything else in the catalogue — and approached Martin, a former colleague, with nothing but a title and "a glimmer of an idea" for a four-book miniseries. Martin built everything else herself: the characters, Stoneybrook, and every plot. The first book sold out its initial run almost immediately.
In this episode, Jess and Rach cover where Martin actually found her characters — Kristy is based on her real childhood best friend Beth McKeever Perkins, while Mary Anne is Martin's own self-insert ("I'm much more like Mary Anne," she's said. "Kristy is my polar opposite"). They also dig into why Stacey's diabetes storyline came from two of Martin's own childhood friends, and the strange way it paid off again decades later with Martin's own cat.
